Besides adding a wonderful taste and aroma to your favorite meals, garlic works wonders when it comes to your health! Garlic has been used medicinally for at least 3,000 years. Garlic was once worshipped by the ancient Egyptians, chewed by Greek Olympian athletes, and thought to even keep away vampires!
Just recently we have been able to prove the benefits of garlic through over one thousand scientific studies. Garlic is known scientifically as allium sativum. It contains more than 100 chemicals with odd names such as allium, alliinase, allicin, Sallylcysteine, diallyl sulfide, and allyl methyl trisulfide. These chemicals have been shown to help a body stay healthy and heal itself.  Here are some benefits of including garlic in your diet:
Garlic and Cancer
Extensive research has been done on the effects of garlic and cancer.  Studies have shown that a compound called diallyl disulphide (formed when raw garlic is cut or crushed) can reduce tumors in size.  Another compound called S-Allycysteine can stop cancer-causing agents from binding to human cells.  The search for compounds in garlic that help prevent cancer continues with strong evidence that many cancers are caused by lifestyle or environmental factors.

Garlic and Heart Disease
Elevated blood pressure can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.  There are ingredients in cooked garlic that can help lower elevated blood pressure by slowing the production of the body's own blood pressure raising hormones.  Other garlic compounds can lessen the tendency of the blood to clot.  Garlic has been said to be a natural blood thinner.
Garlic and Cholesterol
It has been said that populations that consume garlic on a regular basis tend to have lower incidences of heart disease.Through a number of studies, researchers have concluded that garlic can help reduce elevated undesired LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels, without lowering the desired HDL cholesterol.  Normal dietary quantities of garlic in various forms (raw garlic, garlic oil, and garlic supplements) can help reduce unwanted cholesterol levels.

Garlic and Infection
Garlic has also been called a natural antibiotic.  Tests have shown that the compound in garlic called allicin kills germs.  The list of microbes that garlic can kill include botulism, tuberculosis, diarrhea, staph, pneumonia, dysentery, sepsis, and typhoid.  Reports list 72 bugs separate bugs that garlic can help to eliminate.   To benefit from garlic's antibiotic properties, garlic should be eaten raw since allicin neutralizes when cooked.  Researchers continue to search for ways in which garlic compounds can benefit our health.  It is well known that by simply consuming a normal dietary amount or garlic in various forms, can by all means strengthen your immune system so that it can fight off specific illnesses.

All of the documented health factors benefited by garlic help to explain why the nutrition committee of the American Heart Association publicly acknowledged garlic's potential in helping to reduce the risk of heart disease and other cardiovascular diseases.
